Battlefield Berlin
April 15th – April 24th 2023
Perhaps no world capital has been more central to the history of the 20th century than Berlin. Now a vibrant modern metropolis, traces of the city’s turbulent past – whether as the hub of Hitler’s ‘Thousand Year Reich’ or as the front line of the Cold War – may be found on nearly every corner.
We are pleased to announce that we are again offering a tour of ‘Battlefield Berlin.’ Our 8-day visit will primarily focus on three crucial aspects of the city’s recent past. You will walk the same streets as some of the most detestable villains of the modern age as we discuss Berlin’s role as capital of the Third Reich and bear witness to the legacy of their crimes at places like Sachsenhausen concentration camp. As that regime collapsed, the city became a battlefield. There, in the last days of April 1945, teenage boys and old men fought the Red Army street by street while their Führer issued orders to long- destroyed units from his underground bunker off Wilhelmstrasse and a terrified civilian populace merely tried to survive. You will visit sites from this final battle of the Second World War in Europe, beginning with the bloody fields around the Seelow Heights and ending at the Reichstag, where Soviet troops raised their flag on the night of April 30: symbolically, if not quite actually ending the most intensely destructive contest in history. The city’s four decades of Cold War history will not be forgotten, as we will see the remnants of the Berlin Wall and explore the headquarters of the STASI – East Germany’s feared secret police, the keepers of the most efficient police state in history. We invite you to join us as we spend 8 days and nights visiting the locations, both famous and forgotten, where the modern world was shaped.

Our return date – the date you be flying back to your North American airport unless you decide to stay longer after the tour – is April 24th
Air Travel: Each tour participant will need to make their own flight arrangements to and from Berlin.
Once you are booked, we will provide you with information concerning our group’s Berlin hotel and newsletters with specifics on the tour.
Accommodations: Our Berlin hotel is a highly rated 3-star property with a great variety of dining options within an easy walking distance and excellent transit connections.
Meals: Breakfasts are included in the price of the tour, plus two dinners and a box lunch. Other meals will be ‘on your own.’ Each day’s itinerary will include a lunch stop.
Materials: Registered participants will receive an educational booklet containing maps, historical and travel information that will enhance your visit.
Health: Please be certain to check with your health insurer to determine whether their coverage extends to travel in Germany. If not, or if you desire additional coverage, you are strongly advised to consider obtaining travel insurance, which can also cover you for matters like luggage loss or damage, trip cancellation, etc.
Personal Mobility: Please note that our tour itinerary will at times involve frequent walking, and there will be occasions when you may be standing or walking for up to 20-30 minutes. Berlin is a mostly flat city, but plan to traverse sidewalks and city streets and (during the visit to Zhukov’s command post) woods trails.
It is imperative that you advise us if you or any member of your travel party has a physical disability or other medical condition that might inhibit full participation in the tour, as we may not be able to provide the necessary assistance required. If in any doubt about how a disability might impact your participation and enjoyment of the tour, we strongly encourage you to contact us so we may discuss whether this trip is suitable for your situation.
Extended Visits: Should you decide to remain in Europe for additional sightseeing after April 24th, we will do our best to assist you with arrangements if we can.
April 15: Tour participants depart their North American airports for overnight flights to Berlin.
April 16: Tour participants arrive at our Berlin hotel throughout the morning. After lunchtime, we depart for afternoon sightseeing including the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, and Holocaust Memorial. In the evening we enjoy our welcome dinner together.
April 17: Today we will immerse ourselves in the heart of Hitler’s capital with a walking tour of the Third Reich’s government district, including the ruins of Anhalter Station, the Topography of Terror exhibition, Göring’s massive Air Ministry, and the site of the Führerbunker. After, we take in picturesque Gendarmenmarkt, then on to Neue Wache, Germany’s memorial to the victims of war. In the evening we will have a guided tour of a preserved air raid shelter.
April 18: We journey to the notorious Sachsenhausen concentration camp north of Berlin, where we will receive a guided tour of the preserved site. After, we continue on to the villa where the 1942 Wannsee Conference took place.
April 19: A change of pace on this Cold War day. In the morning we will tour the HQ of the East German Stasi (State Security Service), probably the most effective secret police force in history, followed by a visit to the Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Strasse.
April 20: Our examination of the Battle of Berlin begins where the fighting did: at the Seelow Heights east of Berlin. We will spend much of the day exploring the battlefields along the Oder River, scene of desperate fighting from February – April 1945. Our itinerary includes the revamped military museum at Seelow, and the Reitwein Spur where Marshal Zhukov observed the opening of his Berlin offensive.
April 21: We make a morning trip to the forests around the town of Halbe, where much of the German 9th Army was encircled and destroyed in brutal fighting in the last days of April ’45. We will take in the German military cemetery – the largest on German soil – and other points of interest before returning to Berlin and our visit to the excellent German/Russian Museum and (time permitting) the massive Soviet Treptower Park memorial.
April 22: The day begins with a guided tour of the Bendler Block – the historic HQ of the German military and the site of the July 20 plot to overthrow Hitler. We will also take in the ruins of Kaiser Wilhelm Church, preserved as a memorial of the Allied bombing campaign. Our focus then shifts to the 1945 battle for Berlin. We will visit: Landwehr Canal bridges, where some of the final events of the battle occurred; combat-damaged buildings; the Moltke Bridge/Reichstag battlefield, and the imposing Soviet Victory Memorial at Tiergarten. Later, we will experience Berlin’s largest relic of the Second World War, the enormous Humboldthain flak tower with a private tour of its breathtaking interior.
April 23: For those who wish to partake, we will have a short walking tour of neighborhood points of interest in the morning; the rest of the day is free time to pursue your own interests on our last day. In the evening we meet for our farewell dinner.
April 24: Return flights to North America.
*Please note: This itinerary may be subject to alteration due to unforeseen circumstances.
Just a few of the sites we will be taking in during our 8 days in Berlin:
The Reichstag. The famous parliament building has been a symbol of both democracy and tyranny during Berlin’s eventful 20th century. The suspicious Reichstag Fire of 1933 gave the newly elected Hitler government opportunity to crack down on dissent. Twelve years later the empty shell became a fortress as Waffen-SS troops staged a last stand in its ruins during the final days of the war. Today, the creatively restored structure again houses the parliament of a free Germany.
Brandenburg Gate. Since its construction in the 1790s, the iconic Brandenburg Gate has been at the heart of much of Berlin’s tumultuous history, the scene of military parades, revolutions and Cold War standoffs. Topped by its famous Quadriga – stolen by Napoleon and damaged during World War Two – the gate grandly dominates Pariser Platz at the west end of the famed boulevard Unter den Linden.
Humboldthain Flak Tower. As Allied air raids increased over Berlin, the city’s defenses were hurriedly beefed up, including the construction of three massive sets of flak towers: reinforced concrete castles nearly 140 feet high equipped with anti-aircraft guns and radar sets. Most of these vast structures were destroyed after the war, but the one at Humboldthain remains, towering over the surrounding area.
Sachsenhausen. Established in 1936 twenty miles north of Berlin, Sachsenhausen was among the first of the Third Reich’s concentration camps. For nine years, hundreds of thousands of political prisoners, Jews, Soviet POWs, and others passed through its gate, cynically signed “Arbeit Macht Frei” (“Works sets you free”); at least 30,000 never left.
The Seelow Heights: Site of the last major battle of World War Two in Europe, we will visit the key high ground where, for four bloody days in April 1945, a titanic struggle played out between the forces of Hitler and Stalin. The combination of lovely rural countryside and intriguing historic sites makes for a pleasant outing from the city.
The Berlin Wall: At the front line of the East-West struggle, Berlin retains many sites of interest to Cold War enthusiasts, though none are quite as famous as the Wall. While much of it disappeared within months of reunification, preserved sections remain memorialized in key areas.
Booking the Tour:
Please note that spaces will be reserved on a ‘first-come, first served’ basis. It is our intention to limit the number of persons on our Berlin tour to a maximum of 14-15 people. This will ensure that we have an intimate and manageable group size, increasing your enjoyment of the trip. As interest in this tour has been considerable, you are urged to reserve your space as early as possible.
Battleground reserves the right to cancel a tour if insufficient bookings are received, rendering it impossible to provide the tour as advertised. In such a case, notification of cancellation will be provided at the earliest possible time, and no later than 60 days prior to April 15th, 2023. We also reserve the right to cancel a tour for reasons beyond our control that render us incapable of providing said tour as advertised.
Costs / Deposit:
The total cost of the tour is $3,075.00 per person, based on double occupancy. If a single room is desired, the supplement is $570.00. As the number of single rooms is limited, please be sure to indicate this preference when you send your deposit.
A deposit of $250 per person is required to book your place on the tour. Should you have to cancel your booking, your deposit is fully refundable up to 90 days prior to the tour departure date of April 15, 2023, less a $45 per person administrative charge. Cancellations received less than 90 days before the tour departure date will be subject to a cancellation fee as indicated below.
Any deposit received after the tour spaces are fully filled will be immediately returned to the sender.
Fifty percent of the balance of the tour price is due by January 15th, 2023. The remaining balance of the tour must be received no later than March 15th, 2023. Please make a note of these dates.

Booking requests must be made via our Booking Form. Be sure to fill this out completely.

Passports and Documents:
Citizens of the United States and Canada must have a valid passport to enter Germany. The expiration date of your passport should be more than 6 months after our date of departure (thus, it should be valid until at least April 2023). You are responsible for having and bringing an up to date passport, and we assume no responsibility if you fail to due so and cannot travel as a result.
Physical/Medical Considerations:
Our tour will require walking along sidewalks, streets, and steps. Tour participants must be able to stand and walk for 30 minutes at a time without rest or assistance. While the itinerary is not excessively strenuous, you must take these considerations into account before making your booking. You must provide us with notice of disabilities/medical conditions that might impact your travel at the time you book the tour (or, if newly diagnosed, as early as possible prior to the tour date).
We do not accept any liability for your failure to inform us of limiting conditions, and reserve the right to reject any booking from any person who has not notified us of relevant disabilities or who we deem insufficiently fit to participate.
Behavior:
You are responsible for your conduct and that of anyone in your travel party that you have booked. We reserve the right to refuse to book, or to remove from the tour, you or any member of your party, if your behavior or that of a member of your party, is dangerous, disrespectful to other people, or otherwise disruptive. We will not provide a refund or pay any costs incurred by you under these circumstances.
Travel insurance: We urge all participants to obtain travel insurance prior to the tour to protect you against unforeseen issues. You will typically receive the best rates and coverage by purchasing travel insurance as soon as you book the tour. You can determine the level of coverage you require, but it should include items such as luggage and trip cancellation protection, and applicable medical insurance (you should check with your health insurer to determine if your medical coverage is valid in Europe). Websites of companies such as TravelEx are easy to navigate to determine cost vs. coverage, and AAA members can discuss insurance options with their local office.
Travel Information:
We will provide booked participants with electronic informational newsletters prior to the trip, including logistics, travel suggestions, and the like. We want you to be an informed traveler!
We reserve the right to make minor modifications to any tour itinerary as deemed appropriate by the tour director/guide.

Force Majeure is defined as unforeseeable or unavoidable situation(s) beyond our control including but not limited to: war, civil unrest, terrorism, strike/labor dispute, natural disaster, flood, earthquake, volcanic eruption, fire, adverse weather conditions, nuclear disaster, or the threat of any of these occurrences.

What our clients thought about our previous Berlin tours …
“What a wonderful trip. It was even better than I could have expected. Your meticulous planning and attention to detail for all of us to experience World War Two Berlin without a thought given to the mundane. It was a wonderful group of people; thanks for all your efforts!”
