Poland: World War II
&
Holocaust
May 3rd – May 15th, 2026
Poland witnessed the opening salvos of the Second World War, endured over five years of brutal Nazi occupation, and was the epicenter of the Holocaust: Six million Poles died from 1939 – 1945, half of them Jews murdered by the Germans. Going to the places where that happened is not always easy, but it is vitally important that we do so. These are sites everyone should visit at least once, to remind us all of what happens “when good people do nothing” and depravity and evil are allowed to hold sway.
Our tour begins with two nights in Gdansk (formerly Danzig), lovingly rebuilt after the devastation of the war and a charming, welcoming destination. We will take in the Westerplatte fortress, where the war began on September 1, 1939, and explore the city’s many historical layers. After Gdansk our trek takes us to Hitler’s Wolf’s Lair headquarters, site of the attempted assassination of July 1944, then on to pay our respects at the site of the Treblinka extermination camp.
We spend four nights in Warsaw – Poland’s grand, tortured capital is synonymous with the best and worst of modern human history. Here we visit the key sites of the rebuilt city, including the two courageous uprisings against Nazi rule: the Ghetto Revolt of 1943 and the 1944 Rising. Warsaw is also our base for a visit to the Majdanek concentration camp – among the best preserved of all Holocaust sites.
Next, we journey to beautiful Krakow, undamaged by war and Poland’s most popular destination. While taking in its stunning architecture, we also sample Krakow’s wartime history, including a visit to Oskar Schindler’s factory (now a museum) and the Home Army Museum where the inspiring story of Polish resistance to the Nazi occupiers is presented.
Krakow will be our base for touring the Auschwitz-Birkenau camps. From the cynical sign “Arbeit Macht Frei” (“Work Will Make You Free”) above the entrance gate to the ruins of the crematoria, the vastness of the camps stagger the mind and provide a powerful learning experience. Our last tour stop takes us to the world-famous Wieliczka salt mine, where miners have spent seven centuries constructing magnificent sculpted creations of amazing detail, including an entire cathedral, in its 200 miles of tunnels.

The tour itinerary is subject to modification as deemed necessary by circumstance.
Gdansk: The city once known as Danzig was a stalwart of the Hanseatic League and has always been a vital Baltic port. Today it has been restored to its prewar glory and makes for a most attractive destination. While there, we will take in the Museum of the Second World War and the Westerplatte fortress, where the war began on September 1, 1939.
Wolf’s Lair: Hitler’s infamous East Prussian headquarters, from where the Nazi leader conducted much of the war as well as the site of the July 20 1944 assassination attempt. We will tour the remains of the massive complex.
Warsaw: Our days in the Polish capital will take in the most important sites of this once martyred and now rebuilt city, including those associated with two courageous uprisings against Nazi rule: the Ghetto Revolt of 1943 and the Warsaw Rising of 1944. We take in the areas of the old Ghetto, several memorials and museums to the war years, and of course there will be “on your own” time to explore the city as well.
Majdanek: Among the best preserved of all Holocaust sites, the Majdanek concentration camp in Lublin was captured by Soviet troops before the Germans could destroy the evidence of their crimes. Today Majdanek stands as a stark reminder of the past and a warning for the future.
Undamaged by war, lovely Krakow retains much of its picturesque medieval, baroque and renaissance architecture, centered on its stately market square. The city was the ancient capital of Poland and we will be sure to see the Wawel – the famed royal castle. Krakow’s more recent past will not be neglected as we explore the former Oskar Schindler factory (now a museum), as well as the old Jewish quarter of Kazimierz, both made famous in Spielberg’s award-winning film; while the heroic resistance of the Polish people will be addressed during our stop at the Home Army Museum.
Auschwitz: Probably the single most impactful Holocaust site, and certainly the most massive, the Auschwitz camps are a place everyone should visit at least once, in order to gain some sense of the scale of crimes committed by the Nazi state. We will tour both Auschwitz Main Camp (also known as ‘Auschwitz I’) and the Birkenau extermination camp (‘Auschwitz II’).
Please note that spaces will be reserved on a ‘first-come, first served’ basis. As interest in this tour has been considerable, you are urged to reserve your space as early as possible.

In such a case, notification of cancellation will be provided at the earliest possible time, and no later than 60 days from the first scheduled day of the tour. We also reserve the right to cancel a tour for reasons beyond our control that render us incapable of providing said tour as advertised.
The total cost of the tour is $3,350 per person, based on double occupancy. If a single room is desired, the supplement is $675. If you want a single room please make sure to indicate this preference when you send your deposit.
A deposit of $250 per person is required to book your place on the tour. Should you have to cancel your booking, your deposit is refundable up to 90 days prior to the tour departure date of May 3, 2026, less a $45 per person administrative charge. Any deposit received after the tour spaces are fully filled will be immediately returned to the sender. Fifty percent of the balance of the tour price is due before January 15, 2026. The remaining balance of the tour price must be received no later than March 15, 2026. Please make note of these dates.
